Cold Shot Chesapeake Valor Dani Pettrey 9780764211973 Books Reviews
- I like this book because I grew up near where it takes place. There was also a lot to learn for me, at least about this "occupation." There were a couple of problems, though. In Chapter 11, he says "God called husbands to love their wives like the church-- that he believed he could do... " No, the author got it all wrong. God called husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church! That no man can do! (See the Ephesians 525.) Another In chapter 39, she has Griffin sitting in the recliner, then has him rolling "off the couch" where Finley was sleeping. In spite of these, it was a spell-binding book!
- Let me first say that I truly enjoy the writing of Dani Pettrey. I am a huge fan of the Alaskan Courage Series, the books were different and filled with well research plots, depth of characters and setting, romance and suspense. Therefore, I was anxiously awaiting the release of this new series to see the new group of characters that Pettrey would introduce to us. The story was good. However, something is missing. It was sort of your typical formula and possessed all the elements that Christian romance novels should have to be enjoyable but there was nothing endearing about the characters. "The brothers" are suppose to be life long friends yet, other than a moment of truth between two of them about a tragic event that happened in the past and the last chapter, we don't see them relating to each other as anything other than co-workers. Finley, the love interest, is strong and intelligent although shortly after the first few chapters her identity is mainly as sidekick/ride-along. Outside of Griffin wanting to be with her to keep her safe, there is no reason for her to be involved in the investigation and her "skills and expertise" are set aside never to be used again. It was sad to see what could have been a great start to a series fall flat.
Do I recommend you read this book? Sure, it's entertaining. Will I read the next in the series? Yes, because I have hope that as the series grows, hopefully, the writing will grow as well. Would I pay $9.99? I think you could wait this out a few months until it drops a little in price. Your not going to miss anything. - Cold Shot is the first book in Dani Pettrey's new Chesapeake Valor Series. It does not disappoint! It's the story of life-long friends who have had the best of times together and the absolute worst of times together. Their lives are continually merging because of their chosen professions of differing branches of law enforcement. They always have each other's backs. This book has great characterization, chemistry among the characters, interesting background and settings, great mystery, and intrigue to keep you interested from beginning to end. Can't wait to see what happens next!!
- This is a very engaging suspense book. I adored the friendship described in the book and I also liked how the POV varied between some of the guys who weren't the main character in this book. Griffin and Finley have been thrown together to solve a case related to skeletal remains that seem to be recent. But don't think this is a straight forward and easy to guess mystery. There are many twists and turns as the main characters, alongside a fantastic set of secondary characters, have to run for their lives and against time to find the truth and bring justice. The growing relationship between Finley and Griffin is heartwarming and swoon-worthy. And the friendship between Griffin, Parker and Declan adds the perfect smile to this book.
Among the suspense and search for truth there is a wonderful story of reconciliation, forgiveness and healing. - Cold Shot by Dani Pettrey was By The Book’s June selection. My book club gave it a unanimous thumbs up for likable characters, non-stop action and an unpredictable plot. A great book for beach or poolside reading, this one gets our unequivocal recommendation.
A cold case soon becomes almost too hot too handle when a body is discovered on Little Round Top at the Gettysburg National Battleground site. Ranger Griffin McCray and forensic anthropologist Finley Scott join forces to determine the identity of the victim and bring to justice those who killed her. But with a slew of bad guys, tension between old friends and past trauma, this case is neither straightforward nor easy.
My group loved the main characters in Cold Shot, but also those secondary characters we are hoping will get novels of their own. Most are Christians who struggle with trust in a Father they know is good, but lets them experience pain and tragedy and exhibits His strength through their weakness. Both Griffin and Finley turn to God in prayer to guide their lives and discover the truth. Short chapters keep the action going, making this a page-turner with enough twists and turns to keep the characters and the reader off-balance. The depravity of the bad guys is discussed, but never graphically. You get chills, but no nightmare-inducing images. There was only one complaint expressed by all in our group — we have to wait 7 more months for book 2, Still Life, to come out!
Cold Shot is a winner from our new favorite author, Dani Pettrey. Grab your copy for your next weekend getaway.
